Recognition of prior learning:
Key success factors and the building blocks of an effective system.
“Recognition of prior learning means the comparison of the previous learning and experience of a learner howsoever obtained against the learning outcomes required for a specified qualification, and the acceptance for purposes of qualification of that which meets the requirements.”
(RPL) provides formal recognition for vocational knowledge or skills gained on-the-job or as a result of other informal or unstructured learning experiences.
RPL requires a careful analysis of the knowledge, skills and values that will prove competence in a particular field of practice. As a result, curricula and qualifications will increasingly be enriched by the additional knowledge of candidates that was acquired outside of formal education and training, and the ways in which this knowledge may take the qualification more relevant and responsive to the needs of the workplace. It is here where the critical negotiation of two worlds – the world of experience and the world of the academic becomes evident.
Competency Base Training (CBT)
Introduction and Definitions
Competency Based Training is training that is designed to allow a learner to demonstrate their ability to do something.
This may be to make a coffee, create a brochure, lead a tour or deal with a difficult customer.
The key thing about CBT is that you either can or can not (yet) do the thing that you are learning about.
Learners are not expected to perform tasks better than others, or in competition to
others. For example, there are no “extra points” for extra effort or performance.
Learners simply have to demonstrate they can do a task, activity or exercise well enough to be assessed as “competent”.
In other words, they must be successful at the task they are given to complete that unit of work.
